About us

We are the only body in the UK that represents the interests of charity retailers. We have over 300 members with, between them, about 7000 shops.

Our vision is a successful charity retail sector in the UK, actively promoted and supported by the Association.


Our aims - we work to:

  1. Influence and monitor legislation and regulations that affect charity retailing.
  2. Promote the benefits of charity retailing to the environment, the community and to charity.
  3. Be the major source of expertise and up-to-date information on issues affecting the charity retail.
  4. Promote good practice. See Code of Charity Retailing.
  5. Work closely with other relevant organisations to support our members.

What we do

  • Effective lobbying and public relations on behalf of our members on key issues including Gift Aid improvements, correct waste charging, donated stock supply.
  • Promoting of good practice and increased public support through the Code of Charity Retailing, the self-regulatory scheme for charity retailers.
  • Carry out and commission research, market analysis, guidance and information about charity retailing.
  • Host the Annual Conference, Exhibition and Awards
  • Offer training opportunities and support
  • Host active Special Interest Groups and networking opportunities
  • Provide an online discussion forum
  • Offer a free, 24 hour legal advice line and tax advice line

Staff

  • Warren Alexander: Chief Executive
    Warren joined the Association as Chief Executive in November 2009. Before that he was Chief Executive of Core, a charity funding research into digestive disorders. He has worked in the charity world for much of his career, mainly in marketing and fundraising. He has previously been Head of Fundraising at the Prostate Cancer Research Centre, University College London and Head of Business Development at the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health and has worked in a variety of charities concerned with education, health and overseas aid.

  • Susan Meredith: Membership and Website Officer
    Susan has looked after Member Services at the Association since July 2005, and the website since 2007. She studied web development at Birkbeck College, University of London and looks forward to bringing the Association's website to a wider audience. She is going on maternity leave at the end of 2010, returning in October 2011.

  • David Moir: Head of Policy and Public Affairs
    David Moir has been Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the Association of Charity Shops since June, 2006. He is responsible for developing the Association’s policies, and representing the sector’s interests to Governments, stakeholders and others. He is also responsible for publicising and promoting the work of charity retailers.

  • Michelle Moran: Business Development and Marketing Manager
    Michelle has worked for the Association since March 2007. Her main focus is promoting commercial membership to organisations wishing to increase their visibility among our charity members, through our Annual Conference and Exhibition, and other marketing and networking opportunities. Prior to working with the Association, Michelle delivered award winning work and business results for 10 years within the financial services sector, including partnering with The Prince’s Trust on business to business projects.

  • Cristina Osoro Cangas: Research and Information Officer
    Cristina has been the Research and Information Officer at the Association since August 2007. She is responsible for the research carried out by the Association which includes the Monthly and Quarterly Market Analysis of the sector, and other special reports such as the Salary or Rag surveys. Additionally she provides information to support the Association's lobbying activities and liaises with nfpSynergy about the Association's consumer research. She is close to finishing her MSc in Environmental Management with the University of London External Programme with Imperial College as lead University.
