Health and Safety Programme

The Health and Safety programme aims to develop good practice in charity retailing, particularly focusing on: H&S safety management, risk assessment, accident reporting and investigation, manual handling and vulnerable workers.

Induction Guides for Shop Teams
The Association, with the support of Oxfam, has produced an induction guide for charity shop teams on health and safety issues. Available to our members only, the 20 page A5 booklet is written in plain English with colour illustrations throughout. It is intended as a valuable resource for all shop floor volunteers and employees; including new and junior recruits. For further information on prices and to order contact Isabelle on 020 7255 4470 or see the Resources page in the Members' Area (user name and password required).

Online Training for Association Members (The Learning Zone)
Current members of the Association can access our free Learning Zone, which hosts an elearning course on Health & Safety. This online training has been created from the face-to-face workshops which we used to run, and means that would-be users will still have access to the training, but will not be restricted by geography or budget. The continuation of the Health & Safety course is of particular importance, as it covers charity shops’ legal responsibilities. However, both courses are unique in the world of e-learning in that they are pitched directly at charity retailers.

There are five modules including: Health & Safety Law; Risk Assessment; Accident Reporting And Investigation; Specific Control Measures; Health & Safety Management. Although it was created with senior managers in mind as a target audience, the workshop is suitable for all levels of staff.

The course is intended to complement and reinforce existing learning. Neither will lead to a formal qualification. However, upon completion of each elearning course, the user can download a certificate.

If you have any queries or need your Learning Zone user name and password, please get in touch with the Association: 020 7255 4470.
